Baha’i Jalayer Vahdat Released from Jail after Five Years

According to Baha’i News, Mr. Jalayer , who had been sentenced to five years in prison, was freed from prison this morning.

On 24 October, 2010, Mr. Jalayer Vahdat, accompanied by Ms. Sima Eshraghi (Aghdaszadeh), headed to Mashad Prison.

Jalayer Vahdat was arrested for the first time in the summer of 2005, and was released on bail.  He was sentenced again for a second time on 26 January 2009, and was released on bail on 12 May 2009.  He then was sent to prison when his original five year prison sentence was upheld in the appeals court on 25 October 2009.

Jalayer Vahdat’s father Nosratollah Vahdat was executed in 1983-84 as a result of charges of believing in the Baha’i faith; in addition his mother was sentenced to a 15 year prison term ‒ she was freed after several years.

The nine Baha’is who were arrested in Mashhad in 2009 (1) are: Mr. Davar Nabilzadeh, Ms. Rosita Vaseghi, Ms. Nahid Ghadiri, Ms. Nasrin Ghadiri, Ms. Sima Rajabian, Mr. Kaviz Vazdahi, Mr. Houman Bakhtavar, Mr. Jalayer Vahdat, and Ms. Sima Eshraghi.
