Next trial session in Iran for Baha’is set for tomorrow
9 April 2010

(BWNS) GENEVA — A third session of the court proceedings against seven imprisoned Iranian Baha’i leaders is scheduled for tomorrow in Tehran.

It is unknown whether the hearing – scheduled in Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court – will be open to families of the defendants and other observers. The first two sessions were closed.

The seven defendants, who have been imprisoned for two years, were responsible for tending to the spiritual and social needs of Iran’s 300,000 Baha’is.

In January of this year they were finally presented with formal charges, which include espionage and “corruption on earth” – accusations that they categorically deny.

The Yaran, are volunteers who at the risk of their lives accepted to act as coordinators for the outlawed Baha’i community of Iran. They have been imprisoned for two years on trumped up charges of “espionage” for Western powers and “spreading corruption” on earth, “corruption” here being understood as promoting unity between religions and fellowship amongst mankind. The members of the two previous coordinating bodies of the Baha’i community of Iran were abducted and assassinated. These 7 heroes openly accepted the burden of leadership, fully aware of the fate they were being at risk for. They deserve our support, not only in the name of religious freedom, but in the name of the cause they are defending, a cause that demands an end to religious strife that is jeopardizing the survival of our beloved planet.
