My impression is that more women are being imprisoned than men. Can iranpresswatch or someone else please give some statistics about the ratio of men to women being imprisoned, and explain why so many women are being imprisoned, more than men? Doesn’t Shi’ah Islam have teachings about being considerate of women?

    Dear Anonymous,
You raise a very good point about Shi’ah Islam’s teachings about consideration for women, but I don’t think this case is really about religion. I believe, moreso, it’s about a regime desperately, frantically trying to maintain its iron grip on a nation, and using persecution of the Baha’is to set an example for the punishment that will be swiftly and harshly levied on people of conscience. Thank you for posting a question that, I believe, furthers the discussion on this matter.

It seems like possibly this situation has reversed since the time of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, and now the Baha’i women of Iran are taking precedence over the men:

“Question: Will women or men aid this new religion most? Which will be more capable?
Answer: In Persia the men have aided it more, but in the West perchance the women. In the West women evidently have precedence in religion, but in the East men surpass the women.”
(Abdu’l-Baha, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, p. 170)
