Valiollah Ghadamian, a Baha’i citizen imprisoned in Evin Prison, is likely suffering from tuberculosis or pneumonia.
According to news received by BBC Persian, due to Mr. Ghadamian’s deteriorating physical condition and based on the opinion of the infectious disease doctor at Evin Prison’s infirmary, he urgently needs to be granted leave to receive treatment outside of prison.
This prisoner of conscience has been transferred to the hospital several times since October 1st for lung scans and bronchoscopy, but due to a lack of proper coordination by the prison, these transfers were unsuccessful. Finally, on October 7th, the necessary tests were conducted, but after regaining consciousness, Mr. Ghadamian was returned to the prison.
The return of this Baha’i prisoner occurred while the announcement of the test results has been postponed to the coming weeks.
Mr. Ghadamian’s health has worsened in recent days, and he has experienced fever and chills multiple times. According to Evin Prison’s infirmary, due to the overcrowding in the wards and the risk of contracting viral diseases, it is impossible to diagnose and treat his illness properly, and he should be granted medical leave.
Despite the approval of Evin Prison’s warden, the prison infirmary, and the judicial officer, Mr. Neyri, the assistant prosecutor and representative of the prosecutor, has so far not approved Mr. Ghadamian’s medical leave.
Mr. Ghadamian’s family is extremely concerned about his physical condition, but their efforts to secure medical leave for him have so far been unsuccessful.
Seventy-six-year-old Mr. Ghadamian was arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence in May 2023 for voluntarily assisting in the burial of deceased Baha’is. He was sentenced to five years in prison by the primary court, but this sentence was reduced to two years upon appeal.
