According to a report from the “NO to the Harassment and Imprisonment of Baha’is in Iran” Campaign, referring to Baha’i News, Pooya Tebyanian, a Baha’i student who has been denied higher education, is currently spending time in solitary confinement.
Pooya Tebyanian, a student who has been expelled from university, is still kept in a solitary cell despite the release of Afshin Ighani, a fellow Baha’i student, on Friday 25 December, 2015.
Pooya Tebyanian, a student who has been denied higher education, reported to Central Prison in Semnan, a city in northern Iran, to serve his sentence of six and one half years in prison.
Abdul-Fattah Soltani, a renowned human rights lawyer, initially defended him in court; however, Mr. Soltani himself has been incarcerated for his human rights activities.
Previously, on 8 March 2009, this student had been arrested. Judge Dowlat Khah, the presiding judge, sentenced him to two and one half years in prison after he had been interrogated and had spent two months in solitary confinement.
On 12 March 2011, Pooya Tebyanian was arrested for a second time along with several other Baha’is from Semnan: Zohreh Nikaeen, Taraneh Torabi, Elham Roozbehi, Nadia Kasaeyan, and Zhinoos Noorani. He was released on 3 April 2011 after posting $33,600 bail and spending 23 days in prison.
He was once more arrested on 11 June 2011; this time he was sentenced to six and one half years of imprisonment by the court of Judge Ayn Al-Kamal. He was accused of acting against National Security (subject to Article 498 of Iran’s Islamic punitive laws). Also, a year of the total sentence was given to him for Making Propaganda Against the System (subject to Article 500).
