According to HRANA news agency, the news arm of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, on Saturday June 18th, 2022, Fardin Nedafian, a Baha’i citizen living in Tehran, was transferred to Evin prison to serve his imprisonment, responding to a summons to appear at the first branch of the execution unit of the Evin courthouse.
In October 2019, Fardin Nedafian was sentenced to one year in prison by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, headed by Mohammad Moghiseh, including the days of detention. This verdict was upheld shortly after by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeal of Tehran Province. Mr. Nedafian was convicted on the charges of making statues and symbols related to Baha’is, and the holding of meetings with fellow Baha’is.
Also, in this verdict, the reports of the Ministry of Information against this citizen are cited.
Baha’i citizens in Iran are deprived of their religious freedom, a systematic deprivation that, according to Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, everyone has the right to freedom of religion and belief; Freedom to express it individually or collectively and in public or in private.
According to unofficial sources, it is estimated that more than 300,000 Baha’is live in Iran, but the Iranian constitution recognizes only Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism. Because their faith is not considered legitimate by authorities, the rights of Baha’is in Iran have been systematically violated for years.
