Two More Baha’is Begin Prison Sentences in Gorgan

HRANA News Agency – Parivash Shojaei and Rofia Pakzadan, two Baha’i residents of Gorgan, who had previously received sentences, surrendered themselves to the city’s Amir Abad Prison to execute the sentence today. In recent weeks, at least 12 other Baha’i citizens have been imprisoned in Golestan province.

According to HRANA News Agency, the Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran, today, Monday, July 3, 2017, after the arrest of many Baha’i citizens in Golestan province, Parivash Shojaei and Rofia Pakzadan surrendered themselves to prison.

Parivash Shojaei and Rofia Pakzadan, two Baha’i residents of Gorgan, were arrested on October 17, 2012, by agents at their homes, and released on bail until their sentences were issued.

Based on the preliminary sentencing of the court in 2014, Parivash Shojaei was sentenced to nine years and Rofia Pakzadan to six years of imprisonment; these sentences were later reduced to one year and nine months and one year and six months, respectively, by the appeals court.

In 2015, twenty-four Baha’i citizens from Gorgan, Minoodasht, and Gonbad Kavoos were sentenced to a total of 193 years imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court of Golestan province in the first phase, although these sentences were reduced on appeal.

In the last few weeks, at least twelve Baha’i citizens have been taken to the prison in Golestan province:

  • Maryam Dehghan Yazdali (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and six months,
  • Mojdeh Zohoori (Fahandej), (Gorgan resident) sentenced to one year nine months,
  • Farahnaz Tebyanian (Farah Sanaei) (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and nine months,
  • Houshmand Dehghan Yazdali (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and six months,
  • Shadi Ghoddoosi, (Gorgan resident), convicted to eleven years in the early stage, but there is no news about her appeal,
  • Pune Sanaei (Teimuri) (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and nine months,
  • Nazi Tahghighi (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and six months,
  • Parisa Shahidi (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and nine months,
  • Mitra Nuri (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and six months,
  • Hana Aghighian (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and nine months,
  • Sudabeh Mehdi Nejad (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and six months,
  • Behnam Hassani (Gorgan resident), sentenced to one year and nine months,

following a visit by security forces or by surrendering themselves to the judiciary, and have been sent to Amir Abad prison.

Earlier, ten human rights organizations, by issuing a joint statement, asked the European Union to take immediate action to prevent the persecution of Baha’i citizens and the rescission of their prison sentences by authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The letter specifically addresses the recent challenges facing Baha’i citizens living in Golestan province.
