5 Baha’i Residents of Shiraz Sentenced to 10 Months in Prison
March 1, 2010 (HRANA) Five Baha’i residents of Shiraz were convicted of propaganda against the regime by Branch 1 of Shiraz Revolutionary Court and were each sentenced to 10 months in prison.
HRANA – According to the Committee of Human Rights Activists, 5 Baha’i residents of Shiraz, Haleh Hooshmandi, Keyvan Karami, Farham (Hadi) Masoomi, Afshin Ahsanian and Vahdat Dana, were tried by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz and were sentenced to 10 months in prison on the charge of propaganda against the regime.
Two of the aforementioned individuals, Haleh Hooshmandi and Farham Masoomi, were previously amongst the 54 Baha’i citizens arrested in May 2006 while working on a humanitarian mission supported by UNICEF to educate underprivileged and homeless children living in poor areas of Shiraz. They were then also sentenced to one year in prison on the charge of propaganda against the regime.
Mr. Hossein Raieesi and Mr. Dadfar, the defense attorneys for the five defendants, intend to appeal the issued sentences but the sentences have only been verbally revealed and have not yet been formally issued.
Haleh Hooshmandi, Keyvan Karami, Farham Masoomi and Afshin Ahsanian were arrested last winter and Vahdat Dana was arrested on April 25, 2009.
