Another Baha’i Sent to Gorgan Prison

HRANA – Today, Shiva Rouhani, a Baha’i citizen residing in Gorgan who had previously been sentenced, surrendered herself to the Amir Abad prison in this city to execute her sentence. In recent weeks, at least 14 other Baha’i citizens have been imprisoned in Golestan province.

According to HRANA, the Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran, on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, following a large-scale detainment of Baha’i citizens in Golestan province, Shiva Rohani surrendered herself to prison.

Shiva Rouhani, a Baha’i citizen living in Gorgan, was arrested in October 2012 at her home by officers, and was released shortly after that on bail until the sentence was issued.

Based on the preliminary sentencing in the first court in 2014, Shiva Rouhani was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment, later reduced to 1 year and 6 months in prison in the appeals court.

In 2014, twenty-four Baha’i citizens from Gorgan, Minoodasht, and Gonbad Kavoos were sentenced to a total of 193 years imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court of Golestan province in the initial phase, although these decrees were reduced in the appeal stage.

In the past few weeks, at least 14 Baha’i citizens were sent to prison in Golestan province:

  • Parivash Shojaei (resident of Gorgan), sentenced to 1 year and 9 months,
  • Rofia Pakzadan (resident of Gorgan), sentenced to 1 year and 6 months,
  • Maryam Dehghan Yazdali (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 6 months,
  • Mojdeh Zohoori (Fahandej), (Gorgan resident) sentenced to 1 year 9 months,
  • Farahnaz Tebyanian (Farah Sanaei) (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 9 months,
  • Houshmand Dehghan Yazdali (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 6 months,
  • Sheida Ghoddoosi, (Gorgan resident), convicted to 11 years in the initial stage (no news about her appeal),
  • Pune Sanaei (Teimuri) (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 9 months,
  • Nazi Tahghighi (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 6 months,
  • Parisa Shahidi (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 9 months,
  • Mitra Nuri (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 6 months,
  • Hana Aghighian (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 9 months,
  • Sudabeh Mehdi Nejad (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 6 months,
  • Behnam Hassani (Gorgan resident), sentenced to 1 year and 9 months,

following a visit by security agents to their homes or by surrendering themselves to a judiciary representative for implementing their sentences, and were sent to Amir Abad Prison.

Earlier, ten human rights institutions, by issuing a joint statement, asked the European Union for immediate action to prevent the persecution of Baha’i citizens, and the revocation of their prison sentences by authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The letter specifically addresses the recent challenges facing Baha’i citizens living in Golestan province.
